Lanzarote, Canary Islands

Lanzarote, the third Canary Island we visited, is known as the “island with 100 volcanoes”.  Between the years of 1730 and 1736, Lanzarote was on fire with 32 new volcanoes rising from the earth. 

The massive eruptions left behind stark, beautiful, sometimes surreal landscapes of Timanfaya National Park that makes Lazarote unique. With a barren landscape that has lunar like features. 

There are many family units on the island that garden for themselves with the majority of the gardening being done by grandparents. Many of the gardens are small vineyards dating back several hundred years that consist of small individual behind rock walls that serve as wind barriers. 

The island has served as a location to film many movies that have a desert or extra terrestrial theme.

Lanzarote is located only 60 miles off the coast of Morocco, making it a destination for refuges from Africa.

Of all of the buildings we saw on the three islands we visited, all were painted white.

The three Canary Islands that we visited have been the most surprising due to their unexpected sights, features and landscapes, but most of all their beauty.
